Chapter 7. Michael

We were expecting the attack after the raid on the laboratory. We had the perimeter set up with cameras and an alarm to alert us of movement. It gave us enough time to make sure the women were safe and arm ourselves with weapons. I prefer a sword but this time I carry one rifle, two guns, a belt full of ammunition and throwing blades. Long ranged attacks are what is mostly used today. I just miss the feel of the cold steel of my blade in hand.

Sapphire looked so frightened as I kissed her goodbye. I do not want her worrying about me. I have been in so many battles that this one shouldn’t distress her. I must admit that it’s nice having someone worry about me even when it’s unfounded. For just a moment she had forgotten our differences and I was able to see the vulnerable woman she tries to hide. I caught a glimpse of it and it has drawn me even closer to her. She is so brave and perfect in every way. It’s nice to see that she is capable of being vulnerable with me. It gives me hope.

I go with the group of older vampires to the roof. William, Gabriel, Drake, and I will take out as many as we can before they reach the house. Hopefully, keep the damage down to a minimum. The last attack had been costly to repair. Most of us have more money than we know what to do with, but we are taking on a lot of fledglings and it costs a lot of money to supply this many people with blood. It’s not cheap when it’s only a few, tac on another dozen and the cost is a small fortune. They all seem like decent men and deserve to have proper training to live fairly, normal lives. Sure, their diets will be different and they have a few gifts they didn’t have before. There is no reason they can’t have productive lives still. They can find mate’s and have children. They can find happiness as I have now.

I hold completely still as I lean over the edge of the roof and sling the rifle around from where it is strapped to my back. I slide the banana clip in, giving more rounds. I look down the scope as I see the first man enter. I get the crosshairs on his chest and pull the trigger as other guns go off near me. The man tumbles to the ground where he lays unmoving. I move the rifle in search of the next target.

“Fuck, it’s the security guards. We should have killed them.” I growl as I find the next man. This one is running fast, but can he outrun a bullet. I get him in the crosshairs and shoot. It clips his shoulder. Fuck. He must be moving faster than I thought. I try to target him again but he ducks behind a tree. Damn it.
